Red Back Spider

Red Back Spider is a toxic spider. The female redback has caused deaths and illness from its bite. Many bites occur on male genitals, as these spiders construct their webs across the seats of outside and often 'long drop' unsewered toilets. The red back is found all over Australia. The female is the sex most often encountered. It hides in stacked articles and rubbish during the day.  Males occur in numbers around the female's web usually in late summer and autumn. The male is small about 3-4 mm and does not bite. The female is about 12-15 mm, black, velvety and can have a bright stripe (e.g. orange or red) on upper surface and a pail or red area on the underside. Sometimes the female may be entirely black and be mistaken for other species of spiders.

White Tail Spider

The White Tail is dark grey to black in colour with a white marking on the tip of its abdoment. It can be found inside homes on the walls, particularly, in the bathoom. It is also found outdoors under loose bark of trees and in leaf litter. It is not an aggressive spider but like many other spiders, it will bite it touched or placed on the body.

Male Funnel Web Spider

The Male Funnel Web often wanders at night in search for females. The male dies soon after mating. They are black, long legged and will rear quickly into an attack position, with front legs raised, fangs at the ready and tipped with venom. They are very toxic. The Male Funnel Web is more toxic than the female.

Sustained wet weather often causes the male to enter houses, garages and sheds, where it may seek shelter in footwear or clothing. It's a good reason to habiltually bang shoes together and ensure they are empty before putting them on. Also to keep clothes off the floor.

Female Funnel Web Spider

The Female Funnel Web Spider spends its entire life in its funnel in the ground. It leaves only to catch its prey and mate. They usually live for 3-5 years and are 30 mm in length. They are active during the late summer and autumn.
