How to Prepare for Carpet Beetle Treatment

Before your Surekill Technician arrives, there are a few important steps you should take to help ensure a thorough and effective treatment:

  • Clean Up - Declutter and remove any excess items from the affected rooms, especially areas with carpets. This includes any unnecessary items that may obstruct treatment.

  • Vacuum Thoroughly - Pay special attention to edges, under furniture, and high-traffic areas. Vacuum rugs and carpets thoroughly, and be sure to clean out your vacuum afterward. The vacuum bag contents should be double-bagged and discarded. If you have a non-disposable vacuum bag, the Technician can spray it.

  • Move Furniture - All furniture and items should be moved to allow access, so the Technician can inspect and treat the carpet edges effectively.

  • Pet and Chemical Sensitivity - Turn off any air conditioning or ventilation systems and ensure pets and chemically sensitive individuals are removed from the treatment area until it is safe to return (usually after the treatment has dried).

Treatment Time

Our Technician will discuss your treatment options and provide a clear understanding of the procedure.

Spraying Carpet Edges and Activity Areas

The edges of carpets, where carpet beetles are most likely to feed, will be thoroughly sprayed. Any areas showing signs of carpet beetle activity will also be treated, including rugs and locations with dust buildup, pet hair, or human skin cells, which are common infestation sites.

Dust Application in Roof Void

If there is a suspected infestation in the roof void, or if there have been birds nesting in the roof (which may attract carpet beetles), the Technician may apply a dust treatment to eliminate beetles that are living in these spaces.

After Treatment

Once the treatment is complete, your Surekill Technician will review your Pest Management Plan, including when you should schedule your next treatment. They will also send you a reminder email for your convenience.

If you have other pest concerns (such as rodents or birds, which can attract carpet beetles), make sure to discuss these with your Technician so that they can be included in the plan.

Please note that treated surfaces should not be touched until the chemical agent has dried. The Technician will advise when it is safe to re-enter treatment areas.

Keeping Carpet Beetles Away

To prevent future infestations, here are a few steps you can take:

  • Vacuum Regularly - Make sure to vacuum all carpeted areas, including edges near skirting boards and underneath furniture. Carpets and rugs should also be professionally cleaned on a regular  basis.

  • Inspect Cut Flowers - Carpet Beetles can sometime enter homes through cut flowers, so check these before bringing them indoors.

  • Clean Pet Bedding - Wash your pet's bedding regularly, as carpet beetles are often attracted to the organic materials found in these areas.

  • Bird and Rodent Exclusion - Ensure that birds and rodents are kept out of your home, as their presence can contribute to carpet beetle problems.

  • Store Food Properly - Keep food, especially dry goods, in sealed plastic containers to avoid attracting carpet beetles.
