Bird Management Options
Bird infestations can lead to significant damage to property and create health hazards due to droppings, nest materials and potential spread of parasites like bird lice. If you are experiencing issues with pest birds such as pigeons, seagulls or other species, Surekill offers a range of effective, humane bird management solutions tailored to your property's needs.
Our expert technicians will inspect the problem areas, identify the species involved, and recommend the best strategies to eliminate the issue. During the quoting process, our technician will discuss the following solutions with you and help you select the most effective and appropriate measures for your situation.
02.2
Bird Proofing
Bird proofing focuses on blocking access points to prevent birds from entering and nesting in structures. Our technicians conduct a thorough inspection of roofs, walls, subfloors, and other areas where birds may have gained access. Once nests are removed, we treat the area for bird lice and other pests that may have accompanied the birds. Depending on the damage or access points, we repair the structure or install specialised proofing systems like netting, spikes or wire to prevent future bird infestations. Bird proofing is essential for both residential and commercial properties to maintain cleanliness and reduce health risks.
02.2
Post and Wire
Post and wire systems are ideal for areas experiencing low-pressure bird activity, particularly for deterring pigeons and gulls. This discreet system uses tensioned wires supported by posts to prevent birds from landing on ledges, beams or other horizontal surfaces. It's commonly used in historical buildings, commercial settings, and areas where aesthetics are important. The system is robust, long-lasting, and causes no harm to birds while making the surface inhospitable for perching or nesting. Architects often recommend posts and wire systems for their unobtrusiveness and effectiveness.
02.3
Netting
Bird netting is one of the most versatile and effective bird proofing solutions available. It creates a physical barrier that stops birds from accessing roof spaces, loading docks, balconies, and other vulnerable areas. It's highly effective for both low and high-pressure bird populations and works across various bird species, including pigeons, seagulls and sparrows. For commercial applications, netting is used to cover large open spaces where birds tend to roost or nest, like warehouses or stadiums. There are different grades of netting available, including UV-resistant and flame-retardant options, which ensure the longevity and safety of the netting in different environments.
02.4
Spikes
Bird spikes are an effective method for preventing birds from rooting or perching on building edges, window ledges, signage and rooftops. Available in plastic or stainless steel, bird spikes are durable and can be easily installed on a wide variety of surfaces, including masonry, metal and glass. While spikes are most effective for low to medium-pressure situations (such as small numbers of birds), in higher-pressure areas with large bird populations, they can be combined with other deterrents like netting or sound devices to maximise effectiveness. Bird spikes offer a humane, non-lethal way of controlling bird activity and reducing droppings and other damage.
02.5
Scaring Devices
Scaring devices work by exploiting birds' natural instincts to avoid perceived danger. There are a few main types of scaring devices:
-
Light-Reflecting Devices - These include reflective tapes or discus that spin in the wind and reflect light to create visual deterrence. Ideal for large outdoor areas, such as farms, parking lots, and gardens, these devices help reduce bird populations buy creating an uncomfortable environment.
-
Sound Devices - These emit ultrasonic sounds or bird distress calls to drive birds away from the area. While effective at deterring birds from roosting or gathering, the devices work best when paired with physical barriers or proofing methods. Sound devices are programmable to avoid habituation, meaning birds won't get used to the sound over time.
-
Moving Devices - Often referred to as "avian scarers," the devices feature moving parts from rods or rotating arms that wave in the breeze to keep birds away. They're particularly effective in open areas, such as airfields, marinas, or flat roofs, and work well as part of an integrated bird management strategy.
02.6
Repellent Systems
Repellent systems involve installing low-profile strips that emit a mild electric pulse when birds attempt to land. These systems are humane and discourage birds without causing harm. Electric track systems are highly versatile and can be installed on a wide range of surfaces, from ledges to statues and even water features. These systems are ideal for areas with high-visibility requirements, such as building facades, where more noticeable proofing options like spikes or netting may not be desirable. They are weather-resistant and designed to withstand outdoor environments for years.
02.7
Electric Track Systems
Electric track systems are highly effective in high-pressure situations where birds are consistently roosting. They provide a near-invisible, humane deterrent that works by delivering a low-voltage shock when birds attempt to land. Electric tracks are particularly useful for historical buildings, monuments, and other structures where aesthetics are crucial. The system is flexible and can be shipped to fit irregular or curved surfaces, such as domes, statues or signage. The track itself is made from durable materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions, making it a long term solution for bird management.
02.8
Trapping
Bird trapping involves using specially designed cages to capture pest birds. This method is typically employed in situations where birds are causing persistent problems, such as in agricultural or industrial settings. The cages are set up in key locations and baited with food to attract the birds. Technicians must check the traps regularly to ensure humane treatment and to release non-target birds. Pest species are humanely euthanised, typically using carbon dioxide, which is considered the most ethical and painless method for pest bird control. Trapping is combines with other bird deterrent methods to ensure long-term effectiveness.
02.9
Shooting
Though shooting is rarely employed, is is sometimes necessary in extreme cases where other methods have failed or are impractical. This technique is generally reserved for large-scale infestations or where birds pose a direct threat to health and safety, such as around airports. Only licensed professionals can perform this method, ensuring it is carried out ethically and in accordance with local regulations. Shooting is usually used as a last resort in areas where other proofing or deterrent methods cannot be deployed effectively.
